Firefight is the newest release from Montreal’s Blackguard. The first thing that surprised me about this album was that it was put out by Victory Records, as I would expect to hear this on Nuclear Blast or Century Media. The intricate guitar work, the screeching to growling vocals, and the pounding drums make this a powerful metal release, which is not what Victory puts out. Then, there is a whole other level in this music that is gothic and folk-heavy as well. There is a lot of synth and strings going on and fast changes in between the styles. All the changes make this album chaotic at times, but it is definitely a fun listen. You can definitely hear the Arch Enemy, Cradle of Filth, and Dragonforce influences in many of the songs on this CD. Epic builds and crushing choruses make this album a must hear for fans of the darker metal genre.
